Description
An introduction to coral reefs, with footage of both Pacific and Atlantic reefs. Many concepts are covered, but sophisticated vocabulary is avoided (for example, algae living in corals is explained, but the term “zooxanthellae” is not used). Biodiversity, mutualism, niche, threats to reef, physical conditions necessary for a healthy reef, and coral conservation efforts are all topics. With use of the “pause” and “mute” buttons and some teacher narration and interjected student discussion, this would become an excellent customized presentation. Probably most appropriate for middle school. Student worksheet and teacher key included. (28 minutes, 2005)
